Australia’s first premium eSports gaming room dedicated to university students living on-campus

What is eSports?

Esports, simply put, is competitive online gaming. Esports has experienced an exponential surge in popularity in recent years and has developed into a global sensation with countless tournaments, unprecedented prize money and a following that has rightly so attracted a lot of attention. To put this in some perspective, the 2016 League of Legends Championship Final had an estimated 46 million unique viewers – that’s more than game 7 of the NBA playoffs!

With so many keen gamers wanting to watch, attend and compete in eSports, it was only a matter of time before it became a worldwide phenomenon. There are now countless tournaments, mind-blowing prize money (seriously, you wouldn’t believe how big they get!) and even more people getting into online gaming.

Why have we created an eSports gaming room?

Accommodation Services (Melbourne Campus) houses 1600+ residents from different cultures and backgrounds, with different interests and hobbies. The introduction of a gaming room allows us to improve our overall offering to La Trobe residents and also gives you access to a premium space with hardware and software at your fingertips. There are no costs associated with using the room once you are a resident and you can even use the room with other La Trobe students – but priority is always given to a resident. In fact, only residents can book the room, and La Trobe students can use the room WITH a resident. So as you can imagine, students living on-campus have become even more popular!

Tell me about the room!

The eSports HQ has been incredibly popular since opening on September 19. It has been booked every day since opening (but don’t worry, there is still room for more!) and has La Trobe students speechless when entering the room for the first time. It is open from 9am until midnight, with a maximum booking of 6 hours, for up to 10 students.

The Look – The room is set up for 5 v 5, Blue v Red competitive team play with all the trimmings. You will be using Alienware PCs that are powered by Nvidia, with Logitech Gaming Pads, Astro Headsets, AKRacing Chairs – all keeping to the Blue v Red theme, making for an incredible gaming experience.

The Tech – The Alienware PCs are fitted with GGleap – a LAN centre management software that is designed for internet cafes, but tailored for La Trobe’s eSports HQ. It allows seamless, cooperative gaming over a range of gaming titles and platforms…basically you can play any PC enabled game you want!

The Games – If you want to utilise the eSports HQ with games you already own, you can select and download any game you want, and sign in to your own account. Aside from this, we have a library of pre-bought games for everyone to enjoy. We did this to allow our casual gamers to enjoy this elite space, and also so players can try-before-they-buy. Here is a list of the games we have already, with new titles being added regularly.

  • Battlefield 1

  • Brawl of Ages

  • Dawn of War 3

Australian University Games

The Australian Uni games is a multi-sport competition held annually in September/October between teams fielded from a large number of Australian universities and institutions. As you can imagine, Uni Games is a huge event, and with eSports becoming so popular it was only a matter of time that it would be added to the schedule. League of Legends is the latest sport sanctioned to be held with the Australian University Games and was first added in 2016.

La Trobe has already competed well in the eSports component of Uni Games, and with the introduction of an elite training facility – the eSports HQ – we have our sights set on 1st place in 2018! We have already linked-in with LTU COGS – the Competitive Online Gaming Society – to further the growth of eSports at La Trobe and ensure we gaming community to promote.

We hope to utilise the eSports HQ when training and selecting teams for Uni Games, as well as inviting other Universities to compete on our home turf – you’ve got to love that home ground advantage!

So if you are interested in competing in Uni Games in eSports – La Trobe is the place for you!

The eSports Community at La Trobe

Through the creation of the eSports HQ, we are actively building a community around online gaming and promoting inclusive, cooperative communication between students. We have already seen students interacting with each other, who might not have prior to using the eSports HQ.

LTU COGS are also a great resource and community to join for La Trobe’s gamers. They facilitate tournaments and competitions organised by Accommodation Services and play a pivotal role in ensuring a high standard at each event.

You know it’s awesome…what are you waiting for?!
